The sweet traces its roots to early 19th century, and the Thakur family who migrated to Dharwad in Karnataka from Unnao in UP due to an outbreak of plague. The pedas were made from rich milk of the Dharwadi buffalo. Over the years, the peda gained much popularity even outside the state.
